seems you're trying the same I do. Well, so far:

I got Xine (0.9.22 with lib 1.0.0) to work by starting it with "xine -V xshm" 
but I still have sound problems (garbage or error depending on the sound 
support I choose) and menus (I get a libdvdnav error: RANDOM or SHUFFLE 
titles aer NOT supported now).

I didn't try mplayer yet.
