I had the same kind of issue on my beige G3/233. In my case, I found that when 
I booted into and started linux under OS 9 from the BootX Control Panel the 
install would fail at some point when installing some package. It succeeded, 
however, when I restarted the machine and booted into linux from BootX before 
hitting OS 9, not while in OS 9. 

Don't know if this applies to your situation, but I hope it helps.
