3400c, modem, and KPPP

I'm trying to use the internal modem on my PowerBook 3400c to dial up to an 
internet connection.  I've started KPPP, which has found the modem as device 
/dev/ttyS0.  When I try to dial, I get a dialog box that reads 'Initializing 
modem...', but this initialization never seems to get anywhere, nor does 
dialing ever take place, even after 30 minutes.

If anyone else has used the internal modem with YDL on the 3400c, and could 
give some advice, I'd appreciate it.
