Lee,
Try lowering the color depth when you run Xconfigurator to, say, 16-bit. 
Then start x again. If that doesn't work, manually edit the 
/etc/X11/X11Config-4 file (I believe that's the file XConfigurator writes 
to, don't have YDL booted this very moment), and manually check the file 
for configuration errors. Sorry I can't be more specific than that - as I 
said, I don't have YDL running right now.
