Not very specific , check http://www.linux-usb.org/
and the working devices list. The ZIP drive should
work afaik.

Do you have usb-storage and scsi support in the
kernel? Module or compiled in the kernel?
 We need more information to help here.

When you plug in a USB device,  look at the output of
dmesg | tail, or (as root) tail /var/log/messages.
Show us  the result.
