Your SCSI vs IDE theory is the wrong approach.  Last year I managed to
squeeze a YDL 2.3 install onto a G3 upgraded Performa 6360.  That's got IDE
HD and a SCSI CD ROM drive in it as well.  It was a little slow, but it
worked.  Perhaps your CDROM is not apple-branded....You also might have a
bad Disk One.  Try a reburn.  My initial burnings of YDL 3 were fine up till
disc three when the install would totally fail.  I reburned disc three with
another ISO image and all is well.
