xserve eth0 and radeon ve

I'm running an early xserve with ydl3 and a radeon ve video card. The 
monitor is an Iliyama 15 which can support 800x600 and thousands, but 
it refuses to play nice and I can only get X11 to start when I use 
rbdev.
Is there any way around this, because 640x480 is so ugly!
Also, anyone had any problems with the eth0/eth1 ports? The orange 
system warning light is also on - any ideas??
