usb external drive

I just tried hooking up a USB external hard drive. Didn't work. My 
system log shows a few USB messages each time I (un)plug the device. 
The least encouraging message is 'ohci1394_0:Unexpected PCI resource 
length of 1000!' and I can't mount the drive.

I've mounted, partitioned and formatted the drive from OSX so I know 
the drive's good. I did this once with a different drive using YDL2.3 
with no problems. I wonder if this problem is the new drive/controller 
or maybe something in YDL3.0

Has anybody else tried this?
