Graphical problems with YDL3.0 and a WGS 8550

I just got YDL 3.0 installed but  I can't get into a graphical environment.

I configured XFree86 to use a generic 1280x1024 monitor and the fbdev video
card.

It looks like X is doing ok but it hangs when it gets to starting up Gnome.
I get the following message after the screen just hangs there:

An my screen hangs here and I can't get control back...

Any thoughts?
