lost sound in KDE

I've noticed I have lost my sound in KDE.  I can play MP3's via XMMs and
I get alert sounds, but I don't get any other "system" sounds and have
no sound while running MOL.  If I log into KDE as root or into Gnome,
etc I have no problems.  Any clues?
