Ed,
Here's a *real* bit of black magic for you to try.
Check that the md5sum of the *first* CD's ISO is correct. The
program that is calling for the third CD comes from the first CD --
the setup part of the installation process copies the main install
program to hard disk after the fileseystems are all created, then
runs the rest of the process from there.
(Pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps...)
If you think about it, they would have to do something like that
because there is only one CD drive. You have to remove the first
CD from the drive in order to get the second (and, in your case
most importantly, the third) CD loaded. So the program on the
first CD has to leave something behind somewhere to guide the
loading and installation of the second and third CDs.
Then, as always, make sure you are using 650 MB CD-R blanks. Some
older CD drives have trouble with reading 700 MB CD-Rs. The B&W
G3s are just about old enough to be in the generation that had
those problems.
