Install Single HD YDL only Blue G3 won't yaboot

I'm not a Mac person but I wanted to recycle a Blue G3 w/ YDL 3.0. Install
appears to go just peachy but yaboot does not come up after reboot, and I
just get the mute little Mac Face / ? blinking folder. Yes, I read and
followed all the install instructions (and manual 'bout 30 times). Drive's
configured as HD 0, partitions are in correctly (according to the install
companion guide...) no bueno. Any suggestions?
