3.1 soon?

They're usually pretty tight-lipped about release dates, so I wouldn't
expect to see anything but speculation from uninformed folks (like me)
in this list on that subject.

That said, I'll speculate:

1) YDLv3.0 just came out. If I were running the show (which I'm not...
so I'm free to speculate) I'd want to wait at least 6 months (preferably
a year) between releases. It costs real $$ to produce a run of CD's and
you want to recoup as much of that as possible from sales before you
start the process all over again.

2) YDLv3.0 is a great release! It was a major step forward for Yellow
Dog Linux, and I recommend it over any of the 2.x releases. However,
there were some minor problems with the 3.0 release that are still being
straightened out. I'd guess that they won't start on a new release til
they get this one under control.

3) What would you like to see in YDLv3.1 that isn't already in 3.0?
Anything that can't be provided by the normal
apt-get/yum/download-the-RPM method of incremental enhancements?

So... Here's my recommendation:

1) Buy a copy of YDLv3.0. Download and burn the ISO's if you feel the
need, but you _should_ financially support the folks who did the work if
you can.

2) Install it.

3) Get the fixed "apt-0.5.5cnc5-fr3.ppc.rpm" rpm from <<http://ayo.freshrpms.net/yellowdog/3.0/ppc/freshrpms/RPMS/>>
and install it. Do this immediately after installing from the CDs --
before even installing any of the security fixes; apt on the 3.0 cds is
broken, and you need a working apt for the next step.

4) Do an "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" to pick up the latest
security patches and bug-fixes.

5) Customize as you see fit.

6) Enjoy!

7) When 3.1 comes out in 6 months or a year, do it all over again.

I've been thinking of switching to YDL for full-time use, but the latest YDL I have is 2.3. I'm thinking I should buy a copy of 3.x, but if 3.1 is right around the corner, I would wait just a bit for it.
