Video problems install YDL3.0 on Titanium Mercury

Dear YDL folks,

I cannot get a workable version of YDL 3.0 on a
Mercury.

1. "install" does not run right (I just get
impressionistic multicolor screen).  So I use 
"install-safe".

2. install-safe does not detect the amount of VRAM
correctly.  It thinks there is 1MB (1024) when
in fact this model has 16MB.  I corrected this of
course, but this seems like a bad sign.  Monitor
type is also not detected.

3. Installation completes normally.  Upon reboot,
I get the same "impressionistic" screen as when
"install" is invoked.  Unusable.  I can type
blind and invoke "startx" and hear the cool KDE
startup sounds, but nothing but multicolor swirls
on the LCD screen.

4. I tried reinstalling, giving "novideo" as
a kernel argument.  No effect.  
I also booted up the Apple Hardware Test CD.
No hardware problems reported from the extensive
test.

I would appreciate any suggestions.
I'm stuck.
