GE Smart Media reader

I use this SmartMedia card reader because my Digital Camera, Olympus 
Camedia D-100 does not work under Yellowdog at all, never did.  Under 
2.3 I had alot of success with the GE Media reader but under 3.0 it will 
not work under the old setting /dev/sda1, does anyone have any 
suggestions or does Yellowdog inherit the USB bug that has plagued Red 
Hat Linux 8 and 9 and does this mean i will have to recompile my kernel? 
 The only difference that I have made is that I hooked up 2 more 
FireWire drives to the computer
