free ram question.

Anyone... my yellowdoglinux server (2.3) is reporting only 2748 free? 
When I look at the processes running I don't see where the ram is 
going. I can identify only 40-50 mb.
I have rebooted the server and still get the same.
Also I am seeing various processes being ref. repeatedly. Should I be 
concerned?
Note: that when I checked processes and mem. no-one else is logged into 
the server.
