I used to punch my COBOL and FORTRAN code on cards and get my output on a 
line printer... before that, I actually wired boards (as in plugged 
patch wires in to select collate or sort keys or make fields add up) on 
IBM unit record equipment, like a 1401 Tab Machine.  That seemed to work 
OK...
