importing fonts

I've been able to convert a font with fondu to produce a .ttf file. I
then copied that file to the directory where Open Office appears to be
grabbing its fonts from but the new one is not recognised. Same thing
for Scribus.

Do I need to install the font rather then coping it into a directory? If
so, how does one install fonts? I can't seem to find a howto and after
reading man font; I don't think font is the right command.

Thanks
Joe
