Try using the text login and telling XF86config to use the "fbdev"
framebuffer.

I sure wish somebody would publish a detailed "how to" for dealing
with these kinds of problems.<


I have looked at the file "XF86Config-4" or whatever it is called, and I can
find no commands related to frame buffering.  I agree that the problem has to do
with video modes, but I don't know how to correct it.
