17" iMac Monitor Blues

I'm running into the same problems that others have on this  list 
regarding the 17" iLamp (iMac).

I've tried the suggested fixes and am still having no results......I 
can run in text mode but cannot run XF86Config.

My error message is as follows after entering "startx":

Virtual height (0) is  too small
Screens found but have no usable configuration
Fatal  Server Error: no screens found


I tried this to no avail:

Modeline "1440x900" 129.73 1440 1480 1616 1848 900 903 906 936 -HSync
-VSync

and with this device section:

BusID "PCI:0:16:0"
Option "DPMS"
Option "FlatPanel" "true"
Option "CrtcNumber" "0"
