This worked for me on my beige G3. I have an xclaim 128 video card and
a ctx lcd monitor and it took some fooling around to get a nice dispay.
From the YDL Installation guide found here:
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/installation/guide2.3.shtml
Command Line (text) Login
If you chose the text login during installation, you will be presented
with a "login:" prompt. Enter 'root' and then the root password. You
may then launch the GUI by typing
startx [ENTER]
If this fails to 'startx' and you are returned to the command line
prompt, enter:
/usr/lib/yi/dexter.py [ENTER]
(select a different monitor setting)
... and then 'startx' again until you find a setting that works. If
this fails repeatedly, you may choose the "Fail Safe" mode from the
dexter.py GUI config tool which will offer a functional, but sometimes
aesthetically displeasing graphical environment.
Once you find a monitor configuration that is satisfying, then:
pico /etc/inittab [ENTER]
... and change the run-level from '3' to '5' (located a dozen or so
lines from the top of the file). You may save this file by following
the instructions presented at the bottom of the 'pico' text editor
window. When you restart your computer:
reboot [ENTER]
... it will automatically boot to a graphical login, at which point you
should login as a user (not as root).

It's an IBM G74. When x starts, I get the "black screen" "signal out of
range" deal. So I start up
in runlevel 3 to a command prompt. When I run XFree86 -configure (as
root)
it fails, saying:
"can't find drivers, configure failed".
So, how do I configure XFree86 to work?
Do I need to install drivers, if so how?
PS It worked fine with the old Mac monitor.
