Copying a yum cache to a new system?

I've just installed YDL3.0 on a G3 iMac. I've been running YDL on my
iBook for awhile and have accumulated a lot of stuff in my yum cache as
I've never done a 'yum clean'. I'd like to copy /var/cache/yum to the
new system as I only have a 56K dialup at home and manually downloading
the many megabytes of rpms and headers would take a long time.

I've had a crack at it, copying both '/var/cache/yum' and
'/etc/yum.conf' and even manually upgraded yum and rpm in the hope that
that would solve the problem but I can't get yum to work properly on
the new box. Doing 'yum -C list' with the new cache just produces an
error which I wish I'd made a note of before I left for work this
morning. Oh well. Surely I can't be the first person to try doing this.
Any clues?
