One last log to throw on your fire:  A long time ago, I was playing 
with some Motorola VME
boards running OpenBSD booted from a PC running FreeBSD.  Thinking that 
I would save time,
I created the filesystems on the PC (UFS) but found they weren't usable 
with the VME processor.
The difference seemed to be that UFS wasn't the same on a big-endian 
versus a little-endian
system.
