I would say two things:

a) make sure that /etc/yaboot.conf contains the line append =  "hdb=ide-scsi" 
AFAIK most burners can only be used as SCSI drives.

b) my ibook is an 800Mhz with combo. The drive is pretty much crap. The only 
way I got it to burn was from MacOS X using the build in burning tool (and at 
1 speed!). From Linux (but also from Toast) any burn ended with a crash. I 
did not investigate this further as I got a desktop to do this work.
