can't scan, print, toast or format a floppy

I have installed YDL 3.0 on my Power Mac 8600 and have the following
problems. I do not know if they are related or not,so I have put them
together here in case they are.

1. I can't format a floppy (even though I can dd to them and mount them).

When I try to format a floppy the following happens:

[root@localhost robert]# fdformat /dev/fd0
Double-sided, 80 tracks, 18 sec/track. Total capacity 1440 kB.
Formatting ...
ioctl(FDFMTBEG): Inappropriate ioctl for device

2. I can't print.

I have an Epson Stylus Color 777 attached to a USB card. It works fine
under MacOS, and the hardware is recognised by kudzu correctly. I have
Cups installed and it appears to be running OK. Printconf finds the
printer at /dev/usb/lp0. I configure it to use the gimp-print drivers,
although, out of desperation, I have tried many other things, such as
configuring it as a text-only generic printer.

What happens when I try to print is that the job shows up very briefly in
the print queue and then disappears to nowhere.

When I try to get a print preview I get the message "Preview failed:
unable to start program Kuick Copy and Move. Do you want to continue
printing anyway?" (and that is only in those applications that allow me to
print at all - the print options are greyed out in Opera).

When I try to print to pdf/fax/postscript I get the message "blah blah
blah client-error-not-found".

I should probably say here that I have tried to use this printer with
various installations of linux on various Pentium-type machines over the
last year or so and printing has only happened on half of them.

3. I can't scan.

I have a UMAX Astra 600S attached to the external scsi port. It is
properly terminated, numbered etc and works under MacOS. Kudzu identifies
it correctly and assigns it to /dev/sg4, according to
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf.

When I start Xsane for the first time after booting it offers me the
choice of "UMAX Astra 600S flatbed scanner [Umax:/dev/sg4]" or "UMAX Astra
600S flatbed scanner [Umax:/dev/scanner]", but no matter which I chose the
same thing happens. Xsane stops responding for 5 minutes and then tells
me "Failed to start scanner. Error during device I/O".

If I then quit Xsane and restart it I just get a little box saying
"scanning for devices" which sits there for ever and a day until I xkill
it.

4. I can't toast CD's.

I have a Yamaha CRW8424 on the internal MESH scsi chain and guess what? It
works fine under MacOS and is correctly recognised by kudzu.

Actually it is also recognised by cdrecord (using xcdroast as a front end)
and makes lots of promising noises as I start a simulated write. But it
doesn't get very far. The scrolling messages say:

...
input buffer ready,
sending CVE sheet...

and then it locks up the scsi bus so that I have to hit the power button
on everything, including my scanner (which is on a different scsi chain),
in order to get things back to normal.

Is my hardware conspiring against me?
What do I need to do to get all this stuff working?

Thanks in advance
Robert Persson
