Problems with ALSA on 2.6 Kernel - Solved (sort of)

In order to get any volume control for the Audio
Player (XMMS), I removed the module snd_powermac and
installed the module dmasound_pmac and i2c_keywest.  I
also set XMMS to use eSound for its output.  I can now
control the sound quality via KMixer and and change
volume via the XMMS sliders as well as KMixer.  The
only thing that doesn't work now are the startup
sounds but at least the CD player works and I can hear
it when I'm not right on top of the machine.

B.T.W. - Does KsCD work at with YDL?  Although it
appears to know the configuration of the CD, it never
actually activates the CD while appearing to play it. 
Am I somehow missing the point with respect to KsCD?
