I think you'll have few problems.  Go for it.  The Powerbook is a suite
machine.  

If you're buying a 12" PB, just stick with OS X.  Linux, although it
runs fine, won't support sleep, suspend, or power management on the 12"
yet (nVIDIA problems) so it's not worth dealing with at all yet.  

Something you could consider is running linux within VirtualPC (and
windows too).  That way you could have all 3 OS's running at the same
time!

With the Fink packages installed on OS X, I find the unix environment is
close enough to Linux to be comfortable and usable.  I regularly run the
Gnome X11 desktop on OS X.
