more on compiling

I know there have been a lot of compiling questions lately, but I just 
have a quick one.  Is there a way to update a program without 
recompiling the whole program?  For instance I compiled 
OpenOffice-Ximian from source, now I want to upgrade it to a new 
incremental release.  Is it possible to do this without it taking 
another 20 hours to compile on my iMac?
