What graphic card is the PB using? Uuder OS X the PB would sleep when you 
close teh lid, but several graphic cards prevent sleep under Linux (my nvidia 
on the PB 1Ghz 12" is an example) so I could imagine the system then has but 
one choice: shutdown.
