just to follow up... thanks for all the suggestions about this problem, playign with ideas everone's had eventually led to me figuring out that i simply needed to set the depth to 15, not sixteen. apparently my video setup is the kind that only uses 15 bits for "thousands" of colors. thanks! falc at tmail dot com
