IIRC, it' s Xautoconfig-4 generated setup, which *does* contain a valid =20
screen section, at least it works with 2.4 kernels:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Formac"
        ModelName "Gallery 1740"
        HorizSync 55-75
        VertRefresh 60
        Modeline "1280x1024" 108.0 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 =
=20
1066
EndSection
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "radeon"
        BusID "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Card0"
        Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024"
                ViewPort 0 0
                Virtual 1280 1024
        EndSubSection
EndSection
Section "DRI"
        Mode 0666
EndSection

The puzzling thing is that *exactly* the same setup works with 2.4 and =20
doesn't with 2.6. The card and monitor are detected by 2.6 (see dmesg =20
excerpt below). Running startx with higher -verbose and -logverbose =20
settings didn't produce more info. This led me to the assumption that =20
there might be a problem in X11/kernel interaction.

No, it was a differnt problem. With early 2.4 kernels, after running X11 =
=20
in 24 bpp mode, the text output was distorted. Gone since 2.4.18 (? IIRC), =
=20
without any setup changes.

What would be the kernel argument I had to use here?

Cheers, Albrecht.
