dri & lombard

I want to have dri and xv support for lombard. AFAIK, this is only
possible recompiling X with support for my card (Rage LT), this is what I
found on the net:

before putting my computer to compile X and reinstalling it, is there
anything I should do to not breake everything else? (I mean, I still want
the nice ydl->gdm login and all the other stuff)
will the usual make; make install work and not breake all the other stuff
YDL installs by default?
