The odds are that the machine has no idea what IP address it's supposed
to have, so this doesn't seem surprising.  You need to figure out how to
get a plain text login on the console so you can set basic networking
configuration.  Have you tried pressing control-alt-F1 etc to switch to
non-X console windows?
