Powerbook 3400 linux

Hey guys I need some guidance here.  I am trying to set-up some kind of
linux on it.  So far I have tried YDL 3.0 and Gentoo 1.4 and have failed
horriably.  YDL would freeze while retreiveing packages, and Gentoo I
beleave is too tech for me to learn on my own.  I am not stupid when it
comes to linux, but I'm no expert!  I am just wondering if there is
another distro I can use or mabey someone can point out some kind of
stupid mistake I made.  Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on
my problem.

System Specs:

Powerbook 3400
180 Mhz
48 mb ram
striped down OS 8.0
(This is the reason I want linux)
6x cd-rom
zip drive
1.3Gb HD

Partitions:
-------------
376.5 Mb Mac
997.1 Mb Linux

Side Note:
The only thing that I want this for is to surf the web.  Nothing fancy
