Well, I remember that not too long ago, someone has thouroughly improved 
the hfsplus kernel module. It was mentioned on this list, or on the 
linuxppc list.

Dan Burcaw even made a new kernel available with HFS+ support built in 
(see his message titled "Experimental kernel w/ HFS+ suppor" in the 
archives).

The result should be a much improved stability, and hence a lower risk 
on data loss.

I haven't seen any feedback on this improved module though.
