I had left this matter aside for some time, but I have just taken it up
again, following your instructions to the letter.

I am pleased to say that it made things work; the only adjustment I had to
make was to change the permissions of /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip.

Still a bit baffled, as I don't see what the trick was, but very glad that
it works.
