3D for ATI cards in G5, when?

I know at the moment for the powermac G5 there
is only 2D framebuffer support for the ATI 9600 and
9800 pro cards. 
Does anybody know if these cards will
eventually support 3D or will it always be 2D.

Also, what does the 2D framebuffer support look like 
for those with a G5 and an ATI card i.e can one use the the G5 with this 2D framebuffer?

I'm aware of the 2D only where it
concerns Nvidia and their FX 5200 card in the G5.
