Next hardware upgrade: Mac or not? - the decision

I pondered the question for a long time. To recall:
the initial options I considered were a Sharp Actius
MM20 from EmperorLinux, for its tinyness and the
EmperorLinux guarantee that everything would work, vs
a new iBook.

Thanks to very helpful pointers for my research by
Clinton MacDonald, I was finally able to make a
choice. And the winner is: a 12" iBook G4 w/
60GB/768MB Ram. I am going to take delivery in about
three weeks, and I will make sure to repartition as
the first step: in order to leave some space for the
future installation of YDL, when it is mature enough
for all the features to work: sleep, airport, external
VGA.

One other good reason for the iBook is price: the
Sharp would have cost me about 1000 $ cdn more
(including shipping and estimated customs brokerage),
for fewer features (less Ram, less HD, no CD-RW/DVD
(external, extra)) (but also less than half the weight
and less thickness). I couldn't bring myself to fork
over 1000$ just for less weight and thickness.
