The current official Debian repositories have something like 10,000
packages. You rarely need other apt-get repositories because, in my
experience, by the time you hear about a piece of software you'd like
to try out, it's already been packaged by one of Debian's 500+
developers.

That said, Debian's "stable" releases often don't contain the latest
versions of packages because their goal is to distribute stable,
well-tested software. However, if you run "testing", you get more
current software with few, if any, stability issues.
