Okay, I tried it at 64bit encryption (I am using a Netgear MR814 router,
which only allows disabled/64/128 so I can't fumble with the bit amount
too much) but anyway, here's what it looks like when my connection is
unsecure yet working:
eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"9815" Nickname:"localhost.localdomain"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462GHz Access Point: 00:09:5B:D5:E3:10
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:48/92 Signal level:-45 dBm Noise level:-93 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:5575
Tx excessive retries:17 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
And when I try to get the connection to work specifying the ESSID and
the key (at 64bits) I get this in /var/log/messages:
Jul 14 15:54:17 localhost dhclient: receive_packet failed on eth1:
Network is down
Jul 14 15:54:17 localhost dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth1 to 192.168.0.1

Jul 14 15:55:10 localhost dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth1 to 192.168.0.1
port 67
Jul 14 15:55:10 localhost dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
Jul 14 15:55:10 localhost dhclient: send_packet: please consult README

It then continues to connect to my neighbor's unsecure network.
if anyone could give me ANY insight into the problem I'd appreciate it!
