How about jEdit? It is some kind of GPL-like license, I believe
http://www.jedit.org.
I only use it for java, I admit, but as I've grown to know it better, I see
that it does just gobs of stuff -- through plugins, of which are many, with a
handy built-in browser and downloader.
It has xml plugins, which give great syntax highlighting for html. It has a
great ftp plug-in as well.

It does everything that bbedit does -- for me, that is. I still like bbedit
better, though, because MacOSX is still my main machine, and bbedit uses
services (love calc service).

If you decide to try it out, you'll need Java. I use the blackdown version
from penguinppc.org.

It has an linux installer (for the stable version), or you can use ant and
compile one of the release candidates ... but these always have issues.

If you try this out, check out the scheme selector plug-in. It has loads of
syntax-highlighting schemes (I like lighter text on darker backgrounds).
