kernel config question

I downloaded the ydl-2.6-2.6.5 kernel last night onto my osx partition 
last night. I cannot connect from YD because I do not have a working 
modem yet--I need the modules from the more recent kernel to make the 
hcfusb driver work. Anyway I am using a tool in my system preferences 
called ExtFSManager that allows me to see and open files and 
directories on the YDL partition. I moved the tar file over to the /tmp 
Directory gunzipped it to /usr/src , created /usr/src/linux
My problem is that it won't let me make xconfig or  menuconfig it 
complains that there is no target for either! Can anyone tell me what 
I'm doing wrong?
