I've never worked on a laptop before, only towers. Buying a new hard drive
wasn't my first choice because I do not know the steps or caveats involved
in installing a new hard drive on my laptop. Does anyone know of any
manuals or guides to help me through the process? Also, I have found
different specs on laptop hard drives, what are the specs I need to obey
when buying a HD for a Wallstreet laptop?

much of what's installed is pure clutter.

Doing a "yum list installed" it comes up with tons of stuff I don't even
recognize, and when I go through the painstaking process of "yum info
[package]" I occasionally find something useless for my needs and erase it.
However this takes forever and most packages are only a few 100 kb anyway.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks for a better way of removing packages that
they don't have much use for? Or a way to organize the yum installed list
by size so I don't waste my time with the small stuff?

Brian,
Assuming you've already done just a minimal install, you are not going to be
able to remove enough to give you a usable system. Every day you have the
system on it will accumulate log files, and the data you create yourself.
Trying to nitpick a few hundred k here and there is wasting your time and
will only delay the inevitable, never mind the possibility of breaking
something. You will have wasted your time, got nowhere, and still have to
buy a new HD at the end of it. Go buy a used drive for thirty bucks and save
yourself the heartache.

Start thinking about the value of your time as if you were paying yourself,
and you will quickly realize that buying another HD is the cheapest
solution.

Julian.
