Slow Netatalk file transfers to server!

I am hoping someone might be able to help with this problem.

I am running Netatalk 1.5.5 on an Apple Workgroup Server 8550/132 under
Yellow Dog Linux 3.0. I can mount the shared volumes without any
problem.

But when a user tries to copy files (over an IP connection) to the
server the transfer takes around 3x-5x as long as the same transfer
takes
to either another Apple workstation or an Apple server running
Appleshare.

Have I misconfigured something which might cause this?

I would welcome any advice
