Backup Woes!

Whenever I try to run a backup to tape whether from cron using the
Filesystem Backup Webmin module or from the command line (cpio, tar or
dump)
the system seems to be grinding to a halt?

When I tried running a tar command in a shell under X I was able to see
that the backup starts and then grinds to halt at the hidden
.AppleDesktop files under the first Mac user account!

Can anyone explain what is happening? How can I resolve this so the
backup works?

I am running YDL 3.0 on an Apple Workgroup Server 8550/132 btw.
