I've just read http://www.realvnc.com/howitworks.html and I see that
what I always thought was a general limitation of VNC is actually a
limitation of VNC under Windows. I've only ever used VNC with Windows
NT because other systems I remotely access generally have X11
available. VNC on Windows only allows access to a single common desktop
and is, in my experience (and I'm using it right now - kill me, kill
me), really horribly painfully slow.

Quoting the article:
"The Windows server (WinVNC) is a little more difficult to create,
because there are fewer places to insert hooks into the system to
monitor display updates, and a less clearly-defined model of multiuser
operation. Servers simply mirrors the real display to a remote client,
which means that the server is not 'multiuser'. It does, however,
provide the primary user of a PC with remote access to their desktop."

So, while I'd still favour X11 if it's available, VNC is by no means as
awful as I'd led anybody to believe.

I am running with scissors as I type this.

Now if you have XFree86 installed in Cygwin on your XP box and you
start X, ssh -X to your YDL box and login then you end up with your
very own X11 session with the display redirected to the XP box instead
of a local console on the YDL box. This is a 'Good Thing TM'.

VNC just sends regular screen grabs to the client so you can see
what's happening on the server console. The client can send mouse and
key stroke information back to the server. Everything you do in the
client is mirrored on the console at the server. This is more than a
little agricultural and very slow. Also, I think VNC servers are
limited to one connection at a time.

If you're trying to remotely access a Windows box or Mac OS box it's
great because those operating systems don't allow remote GUI logins
but best avoided if you have the option of an X11 session.

ROTFLMAO! Well said!

Now we need to compose an analogous list for the Real Women among us
(hmmm... might include *not* shaving certain limbs).

Best wishes,
