Powerbook and boot from CD problem

I have a 6500/250 with Mac OS 8.1 on 450mb partition.  The smallest
I've tried.  Why waste a gig if you're not intending to boot into it?
 I know you can have a smaller Mac OS partition, but don't know off
the top of my head how small you can go.
