OT: tibook keeps making clunk sound

this is a tibook 2002 <powerbook g4> 1ghz  the hd is centered to the 
front and the noise was coming from the front/center/right and the 
dvd-cd-rw is to the right of that.
as i type there is no clunking but there is a soft whinning from the 
right fan.
 by the by does the fan suck air in or blow out?
