Working around AirPort Extreme

My new iBook has AirPort Extreme, so I'm screwed until something 
develops on the driver side.  However, I was wondering what work 
arounds exist.  Is it possible to use a USB-wireless dongle and turn 
off airport?  Will the network wizard find the USB interface?  I'd be 
willing to go that direction for the convenience of not having to sit 
next to a wire while working.
