I now have a functioning YDL 4.0 on my Pismo/400, with X11 GUI working.
Here's the history:

Previous installs of YDL 4 rc1, rc2, rc3. Varying degrees of
functionality with different subsystems.
Installed YDL 4.0 final; GUI install failed to recognize LCD and Rage
128 mobility interface. Installed in text mode (Everything.)
Reinstalled YDL 4.0 rc3 (successfully installed in GUI mode) - chose
"Personal" mode, default software, NO formatting of partition. After
installation, it booted into GUI mode and I finished configuration.
Rebooted to OS X, used ext2fs kext to access the linux partition,
copied /etc/X11 directory to a safe place on OS X partition.
Reinstalled YDL 4.0 final, (had to choose text mode, personal mode,
default software, NO formatting of partition.) Booted back to OS X,
checked differences of /etc/X11/ directory, verified that the only
thing that had changed was the XF86Config file. Copied XF86Config file
from saved rc3 version back to the linux partition. Rebooted into YDL,
got it to startup in GUI mode and logged in with full GUI
functionality.

Next on the list is networking. Here is the status:
Interfaces detected and configured: eth0 (wired, not connected) and
eth1 (Airport, connects to existing 802.11b hosted by Rev A.
basestation.)
I can do ssh to another system on the network (B&W G3/450, running
10.2.8) and also can connect to apache running on the same system. This
confirms that networking is functioning. I cannot connect to ANY
domains outside my local network. Any attempt through Mozilla returns
either "domain cannot be reached" (if given an URL) or "connection
refused" (if given an IP address for a domain looked up on the other
system. The file /etc/resolv.conf contains addresses of two known
nameservers which are valid for my OS X connection.
Any suggestions for fixing this?
